If your career ended today, what legacy would you leave behind?
This powerful question could change your path today.
Remember: it is never too late to make things better, to improve, and to choose to live an intentional and meaningful career and life path. Every day counts!
Today, I will share some insights about Leadership Legacy, the lasting footprint your leadership leaves in the world.
There are Three "Cs" Fundamentals about Leadership Legacy:
Character
Contribution
Connection
Let’s take a closer look at each one...
Character is the origin of legacy.
This is about the values you live, the integrity you show and the credibility you own.
Character is who you are and that contains your values, and the ethics that rules your behaviours. Then, credibility is what people believe about what you can do and the consistency you demonstrate over time.
Have you heard of the Say/Do Ratio? — the idea that people remember what you said you would do?
The Say/Do is the proof of trust and it is scored every day through your promise and your delivery.
High character + low say/do ratio = good intentions, poor reliability.
Low character + high say/do ratio = consistency behaviour, but not trustworthy.
High character + high say/do ratio = credibility.
Contribution is your hallmark, that something that is better because of you.
What is the tangible impact you’re working toward? And is it truly long‑lasting?
Reflect on the ideas that you have transformed into reality and the visible impact those have brought. It can be ideas, projects, ways of working, innovations — anything that will last and that will carry your proven signature.
However, contribution is not only operational.
Contribution also lies in how you help people grow. The skills they gained, the confidence they built, and the opportunities they accessed because of you.
Finally, there is a contribution that can impact people's identity. That is the influence you have had on who people become. And it shows when someone says: "Because of you, I see myself differently; I'm more confident." This is the deepest form of legacy.
Connection is the human link that makes influence meaningful.
What emotional imprint do you hope to leave behind?
This reflects the genuine interest and care you bring to every interaction. And it becomes genuine through being present, listening with empathy, and putting people first.
Finally, connection is strengthened through trust, respect, and attention to the emotional dynamics of daily interactions.
Coaching exercise for today: Legacy Story Draft (Journaling)
Goal: Define the story you want others to tell about your leadership. Activity: Write a short paragraph answering:
If someone described my leadership without mentioning achievements, what would I want them to say?
What do I want people to gain because they crossed paths with me?
This will become part of your Leadership Legacy Intention Statement.
May this article fuel your journey with self‑awareness, intention, and courage to build a legacy that lasts.
