I remember several times in my childhood, playing by myself and imagining that a certain tree on my family's farm was a house, and each branch a room. I still see kids in playgrounds taking a stick and drawing things.

What moment in your childhood sparked your imagination the most? What does it do for you now as an adult?

The skill we are going to explore today is related to imagination, idea generation, and creating something new from it.

Can you guess what that is?

Now that AI allows anyone to generate ideas and learn instantly, CREATIVITY has become even more relevant; it’s the human skill that keeps us original, intentional, and impactful.

Creativity is a neural process involving the coordinated activation of several brain regions. It engages our imagination, helps us envision new possibilities, connect dots, reframe perspectives, assess emerging ideas, and decide which ones truly matter.

In the AI era, this ability has become a true leadership skill, a strategic advantage. By the end of this article, you’ll understand why and discover three practical ways to strengthen it.

At its core, this neural process comes alive when the brain shifts fluidly between:

  • generating ideas

  • evaluating them

  • deciding which ones matter

A quick daily life example: You’re planning dinner after a long day.

  • Generating ideas: “I could cook pasta, order sushi, or make a salad.”

  • Evaluating them: “Pasta is fast, sushi is expensive, salad is healthy but not very filling.”

  • Deciding what matters: “I want something quick and comforting—pasta wins.”

This rapid switching is creativity in action: imagining options, assessing them, and choosing the one that fits your intention.

Now try to imagine the three steps for this scenario: at work, you need to propose a solution to help teams to give a faster first response to customers and improve customer experience.

Then,

What stimulates Creativity in humans?

The strongest stimulators are:

  • Novelty exposure — new environments, new tasks, new sensory input.

  • Positive mood — dopamine increases cognitive flexibility and idea generation.

  • Mind‑wandering — daydreaming activates imagination networks.

  • Physical movement — walking, dance, yoga increase oxygenation and loosen mental rigidity.

  • Constraint + freedom balance — small constraints push the brain to find unconventional solutions.

  • Cross‑domain input — mixing unrelated fields (music + engineering, art + leadership).

  • Rest — stepping away allows unconscious processing.

Finally, following these factors, you will find below three practical exercises to stimulate your Creativity.

Let’s start with two activities involving physical movement, walking and dance improvisation. Movement boosts creativity by increasing oxygen flow to the brain, lowering mental inhibition, activating sensorimotor networks, and shifting you from analytical thinking into more associative, idea‑generating modes. Then, the third one is more for the mind.

  1. Walking: Stanford studies show walking increases creative output by 60%. The steady rhythm frees up cognitive resources and stimulates divergent thinking.

  2. Dance improvisation: Unstructured movement breaks linear thinking. It activates sensory integration, emotional expression, and spontaneity.

  3. Constraint Day: Choose one constraint for the day (e.g., “No complaining”, “Only ask questions”). Living inside a constraint forces creative adaptation.

If we don’t exercise creativity, the brain becomes more rigid, less flexible, and less able to generate or evaluate new ideas.

Creativity allows us to bring our uniqueness to this world, our signature, beyond what has been written. As leaders, we should create the right environment to exercise creativity, such as enabling psychological safety, experimentation, cross-functional activities, and permission to fail.

How do you live and practice creativity in your routine?
